Bike Helmets are mandatory by law for all children, ages 12 and under the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, Chapter 35. Children riding in a passenger seat on their parents' bicycles must also wear helmets. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also strongly urges bicyclists of all ages to wear a helmet while riding. Green Tree Police will be reminding bicyclists of this law throughout the Borough this summer.

Bicyclists are considered vehicle operators. They MUST obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings. When cycling in the street, cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.

Drivers of motor vehicles need to share the road with bikes. Be courteous and allow at least three feet clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road. Look for cyclists before opening a ca door or pulling out from a parking space. Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals. Be especially watchful for cyclists when making turns.

It's a good idea to wear fluorescent or brightly colored clothing when riding a bicycle during the day, at dawn or dusk. When riding a bike at night, be sure to use a front light and a red reflector or flashing rear light on the bicycle and use retro-reflective tape or markings on equipment or clothing.
