Green Tree recycles newspaper, glass, metals, aluminum and telephone books! Newspapers must be kept separate and are placed in the green dumpster near the Public Works facility on Poplar Street. Glass, metals and aluminum should be rinsed clean and can be co-mingled in the same bag and deposted in the brown dumpster. A separate, smaller dumpster has been provided for the recycling of telephone books only.

We RecycleIf you can separate your aluminum cans from your other recyclables, the Green Tree Rotary has a bin for the collection of aluminum cans. The proceeds from the recycling of the cans are used toward local projects such as college scholarships, flu clinics, youth sports programs, etc.

The Green Tree Public Works Department supervises a leaf collection recycling program in the fall. Leaves are collected curbside on a weekly basis from mid-October until early December. A free compost pile for public use is available at the Green Tree Park parking lot entrance. After the Christmas holidays, the Public Works Department collects discarded, undecorated Christmas trees for mulching and use throughout the Borough parks and properties. HEALTH DEPT. SPONSORS APPLIANCE RECYCLING PROGRAM
Offers Free Curbside Pickup of Freon-Containing Appliances

The Allegheny County Health Department is sponsoring a free program to collect and recycle freon-containing household appliances that are no longer in use and need to be discarded.

The program is available to Allegheny County residents only and offers curbside pickup of refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers and other household appliances that contain freon. No commercial appliances will be accepted.

"Removing freon from these appliances and then recycling them is a win-win for the environment and public health," said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.

"Hillsides are less likely to be littered with abandoned appliances, valuable landfill space is conserved and removal of freon prevents release of gases that deplete the ozone layer, which blocks the sunšs ultraviolet rays that increase the risk of skin cancer."

The program, funded by a $90,000 grant from the County Clean Air Fund, will begin May 29 and continue until at least 2,250 appliances are collected and recycled.

The Appliance Warehouse on the South Side will carry out the program under a contract with the Health Department. For more information and to arrange for an appliance pickup, please call 1-888-GO-FREON (1-888-463-7366).

Equipment that meets minimum standards will be refurbished and resold and all proceeds will support its non-profit job training and community programs. Equipment that cannot be refurbished will be responsibly recycled. Donors will be responsible for removing data from hard drives and other storage media before donating to Goodwill.
