2011 Team Information

DAILY PRACTICE

Practice for first year swimmers begins on Monday, June 8th, at 8 p.m. at Green Tree Pool. Practice for all other swimmers begins on Wednesday, June 8th. If you are NOT a member of Green Tree Pool, you will not be able to enter the pool until 7:45 p.m. on practice nights.

Practice is held every evening (Monday - Friday, unless noted on the calendar) at Green Tree Pool, RAIN OR SHINE! Practice is only cancelled due to thunder and lightning. Even if it rains all day and clears up by 7:30 p.m., practice is usually held. A decision as to whether or not a practice will be held will not be made until after 7:30 p.m. on practice nights. Although attending daily practice is not mandatory, it is a must for skill development and improvement and for the coaches to know who you are and how you swim.

Swim Practice is usually over by 9:30 p.m. for the younger swimmers and 10:00 p.m. for the older swimmers. However, it is at the discretion of the coaches as to when practice is over. The Swim Team and Green Tree Pool are not responsible for any child who leaves the confines of the pool gates. Please be early to pick up your children. This is not a babysitting service!

Parents are not allowed on the pool deck or the beach area (grass) during practice. If you have any questions or concerns about the practices, please talk to the coaches before or after practices - not during.

SWIM MEETS

Swim Meets consist of 56 races, some with 2 or more heats per race depending on the number of swimmers. Your child will typically only be swimming in 3 heats of three different races (most often NOT in a row). When your child arrives for the meets, he/she should go directly to the sign in table/coach who will write on your child's hand which races he/she will be competing in. The swimmers will warm up as a team and sit together on the "beach" as a team. Please expect each meet to last a minimum of three hours - leaving early could cause the team to forfeit some races!

All swimmers are expected to stay the whole meet to cheer on their teammates and clean up after each meet. We are graciously provided the use of Green Tree Pool by the Borough of Green Tree, therefore, it is our responsibility and obligation to clean up after practices and meets.

All swimmers should wear their team T-shirts and team swimsuits (if they have one) to the meets. Swimmers should also stay in the designated "Green Tree Swim Team Beach Area" so they do not miss any of their races. The starter will not hold an event in order to look for a child who has not shown up to race. Parents and/or guardians should be aware of where their child(ren) are at all times and make sure they line up when their race is called. Green Tree coaches, board members, and parent volunteers are NOT responsible if your child misses his or her race.

VOLUNTEERS

Parents, we need your help! Our swim team only thrives because of the time and talents of the many parent volunteers on the team. Please see any Swim Club Officer at any one of the evening practices to sign up in a variety of ways at the meets, practices, fundraisers and picnic. A volunteer fee of $25 will be charged to any family that does not volunteer for a minimum of two (2) swim meet.

SWIMMER SURPRISE NIGHTS

Swimmers Surprise Nights are unscheduled treats for swimmers who attend daily practices. From chips to pizza to playing on the slide, these nights are unannounced and another reason to attend daily practices on a regular basis.

FOLDERS

Each Family is assigned a folder at the beginning of the summer. The folder box is usually located on one of the round tables in the concession area. Please check your folder each night after practice for important team information. Newsletters and other information will be posted on the Swim Team Bulletin Board located by the pool entrance gate. Make a habit of stopping by to read the information provided.

ALL-STARS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS

The swimmers with the first and second fastest times in each event, in each age group, go to the Championship Meet. They are ineligible to go to the All-Stars Meet. Everyone else competes in All-Stars. Swimmers competing in individual events at All-Stars are eligible to compete in relays only at the Championship Meet. It is imperative that the coach know whether you are able to attend either event as soon as possible. Being eligible for Championships should be every swimmer's goal at the beginning of the season, and the reason for attending daily practice.

RIBBONS

Every swimmer should check their folder for their ribbons after practice a day or two after meets. The ribbons should have your name correctly spelled on them, the event you swam, your time, and a DQ, if you were disqualified. Usually, most swimmers will get a participant ribbon. Only the swimmers in the first heat of every event get place ribbons (1st through 6th). The goal of each swimmer should be to improve his or her own time with each swim meet.

SHSSC RULES

The Green Tree Swim Team is a part of the South Hills Summer Swim Conference which has adopted the NCAA Regulations for swimming diving that govern our technical rules. Parents may review the 2011 Men's/Women's Swimming and Diving Rules book by visiting www.ncaa.org.

AWARDS AND PRIZES

Several awards and prizes are given out at the Family Picnic in August. The awards and prizes are based on meet participation, practice attendance, skill improvement, fundraising participation, and car wash participation. It is not enough to swim at the meets only and not participate in the team practices and activities.
